Alex McColl's Profile

Moving to Shettleston in the year 1968 from Haghill, just after my youngest daughter was born - we had our first garden and thought we were toffs. Ardgay Street was sometimes known as Sandyhills and some of the old Shettlestononions say it was Shettleston.

I had three girls at school. Kathleen remained at school in Denniston. Tracey and Donna attended the local Primary – later to go the Academy.

I was employed by British Olivetti, as a Setter/Operator. Kathleen went to Italy through Olivetti’s for a month at a cost of £14 (incusive of everything). They were chaperoned by the ladies from the Personnel Dept.

I’ve actually a photo of them all standing at the airport with the plane in the background, saying ‘Alitalia’. As far as I know they visited several cities including Florence and Pisa.

I took an interest in poetry and this was the first poem I wrote.

THE DISHES

I have a daughter Tracy she was very good at art,
She would not wash the dishes but you should taste her tarts!
Her little sister Donna came home from school just fuming…
She said, "It‘s not my turn again - do you think I’m Wonder Woman?"

Kathleen is the eldest and she is a different class
She would wash the dishes and never miss a glass!
Although there’s something I forgot
Although she’d wash the dishes, she never did the pots

That just leaves Mum and Dad,
You’ll always find us willing
I guess, that’s just whats wrong with us,
We’re two pence of the shilling!
