This Shettleston institution
served the local community well for many years. Developers planned to
demolish the derelict Shettleston swimming pool to make way for a £5m
housing development, with homes costing between £70,000 and £95,000
each.
Shettleston Park Developments wanted to flatten the 80-year-old baths and build 74 flats in a move council bosses said would regenerate the east end area. Shettleston Baths in Elvan Street closed around ten years ago after councillors were shocked by its condition. They discovered the outside brickwork was crumbling, it had a leaky roof and was losing more than 100 gallons of water a day through cracks. Original plans to redevelop the site suggested creating 88 flats but this was reduced after objections from the Architectural Heritage Society, which claimed the density of the development was above the City Plan guidelines. It also said the scale of the three and four-storey blocks, which will contain flats costing between £70,000 and £95,000 each, would be "out of line" with buildings on either side of the development. The new proposals featured one block of flats
facing Shettleston Road and another facing Elvan Street. Steve Inch,
director of development and regeneration services, said: "The completed
proposal will have significant urban regeneration benefits." |
